The Detroit District, established in 1841 covers 82,000 square miles of land inhabited by about 14 million people and has 4,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. The District's major mission is to investigate, plan, design, construct, operate and maintain Congressionally authorized water resource projects related to navigation, flood control, beach erosion and other activities.
